Effective October 1, 2026, Connecticut will require a minimum 48-hour waiting period from the time a couple completes their marriage license application in person in the town where the marriage ceremony will take place before the marriage license may be issued.
For example, if a couple completes their marriage license application in person on a Monday, the earliest they may receive their marriage license will be Thursday of the same week.
Please Plan Accordingly
As with Any Marriage License related questions please look at the Town Clerk’s Web page or call their office.
The reason for the Connecticut Legislation was the serious influx of “arranged or brokered” marriage where one party was Paid to Marry the other in order to obtain a Green Card ( strictly a business transaction). This fraudulent activity and resultant legislative countermeasure has made the process more difficult for couples with a time crunch, ie Military.
